One of the Michigan's top tourist areas may also be one of it's most haunted! Used for centuries as a burying ground for the Chippewa Indians, Mackinac Island was to become the location for a strategic British Fort, which was built in 1780. Many stories are told of the ghost soldiers still standing guard at the fort. One ghost soldier has even been reported on carriage tours bound for the Fort! The Mackinac hauntings' don't end with the fort! The bed and breakfast now known as Small Point Cottage was originally built in 1882 on the East Bluff. It has since been moved to the east side of Old Mission Point. Although the ghost of a man has been sighted in an upstairs bedroom, most of the activity is believed to be caused by the playful ghost of a young girl. Footsteps, knocks on the door, and missing keys are some of the more common occurrences. Another haunted location on island worth mentioning is Pine Cottage. Built in 1890 on Bogan Lane, a female resident was murdered there in 1942. Since that time footsteps accompanied by the sound of doors opening and closing are heard throughout the place. On one occasion, the spirit of a woman, visible only from the waist up, rushed out of a closet, almost knocking over the owner, then disappeared out a window! This is one of the rooms in the cottage that the owner's dog refuses to enter. There have also been sightings of a man and a little girl, the latter of which is thought to rummage through a toy box in the middle of the night. |
