Being the largest city in the Upper Peninsula, Marquette seems to have plenty of room for its ghosts. One of the most notable buildings in the city is an old abandoned orphanage. Just seeing this place you know there is bound to be ghost stories surrounding it! The orphanage was built in 1915 and operated until the late 1970's. Voices of children and the ghost of a nun supposedly haunt the grounds and building. One group who explored the buildings sublevels claim to have heard voices in the auditorium of the place. Another site in Marquette believed to harbor ghosts is the Fine Arts Center on the campus of Northern Michigan University. A former custodian of the building died of a heart attack while in the elevator. A student found his body the next day. Since then, ghostly whistling can be heard at night throughout the building. The elevator is also known to open and close on its' own. One of the more upscale hotels in Marquette, the Landmark Inn is also believed to have several of its' own spirits. Certain themed rooms in the Landmark have haunting stories surrounding them, but the reasons for the hauntings are not known. |
