Found on Lake Superior at the western base of the Keweenaw, Ontonagon is home to several notable hauntings. The Ontanogan Lighthouse was built in 1866 and operated in 1963. The lights fuel reservoir had to by manually refilled every four hours. The fuel can, which was used for this, is now part of a display, as the building has been turned into a museum. On occasion, the can has been found moved from the display to the stairway, and can sometimes be heard being set down on the stairs. This sound is known to be accompanied by a "cold spot". There is also the legend of a cabin in the foothills of the Porcupine Mountains, which has been abandoned due to poltergeist activities, including physical attacks on inhabitants. There are also reports of several very active hauntings in private residence throughout the town. Why do the spirits seem so restless in Ontonogan?
