Paulding's Spirit Lights

Paulding Spirit Lights

The Paulding Lights may be the best-known phenomena in the Upper Peninsula.  Located in the Ottawa National Forrest of Robbins Lake Road, 5 miles north of Watersmeet, the location of the sightings is marked by forest service signs.

Scientists and paranormal researches alike have investigated the lights, which are seen at night and move erratically over a trail.  Neither has been able to ascertain their cause.

One legend has the ghost of a dead railroad conductor carrying his lantern down the trail.  Another claims the lights are the spirits of a postal worker and his sled dogs who were murdered on that trail.  This legend lead to the area being called "Dog Meadow".  Yet another legend claims that the ghost is that of a local tavern owner called Pancake Joe, who fought against the power lines that now run down the trail.

Nobody knows for sure what caused these lights, or how long they have been occuring.  But one thing is for sure, they are there, witnessed by many each year!
