Located near Brimley, about 20 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie, sits Point Iroquois. The land was named so because of a slaughter that occurred there in the 1600's. It is said a band of Iroquois warriors were camping out there on their way to attack the Chippewa at Sault Ste. Marie. The Chippewa found out about their planned attack, and sent a party that night to kill the warriors while they slept. The Ojibwa call the point "Nadouenigoning", which means "Place of Iroquois Bones". Legend has it on certain nights the wails of the murdered Iroquois can still be heard! The Point Iroquois Light House was built on the location in 1855. One summer, a local girl was killed by a bear near the lighthouse. Since then, there have been reports of a girls voice heard at the lighthouse. The lighthouse is currently run as a museum during the summer months. |
