Sault Ste. Marie

Sault Ste. Marie

Why wouldn't Sault Ste. Marie be haunted?  It's the oldest city in Michigan, having been founded as an official city in 1668, and draws hundreds of thousands of tourists every year for the history of the area, and to view the Soo Locks, the worlds largest ship locking system.

Having been occupied by the Chippewa Indians for centuries before the first Europeans landed, there are plenty of opportunities to hear stories of hauntings' throughout the city.

Not only is Sault Ste. Marie the oldest city in Michigan, it's also home to the oldest Court House in the State.  Built in 1877 on the site of a former Baptist Mission, the Chippewa County Courthouse looks much the same today as it did during the late 1800's, which may account for some of the spirits sticking around there today!  Stories tell of certain offices in the building , which report papers moved during the night and footsteps heard throughout the building when no one is present.

Near the area of the courthouse is the location of the former Fort Brady.  The U.S. Army fort was built in 1823 at the waterfront area now known as Brady Park and its surrounding areas on Water Street.  One structure in this area, which is sometimes operated as a bed and breakfast, has its own story of the ghost of a soldier, which haunts the Inn.  Incidences of doors opening on their own, light bulbs continuously blowing shortly after they are put in brand new, and footsteps from the upper floors of the house have become common to the residents.

In 1892, the fort was moved to the hilltop located at the corner of Easterday Avenue and Ryan Street.  The fort was later closed and the property and buildings became what is now Lake Superior State University.  Now it is students who roam the halls of the old buildings, but it appears some soldiers or other entities still walk with them!  One haunting complex which is formerly an officers residence is said to have a closet door, which at times cannot be opened, and other times produces "cold spots".  Another story centers on a dormitory, which use to be troop housing.  Reports have been made of a light moving through the attic, which is locked off from the rest of the building.  Sounds are also heard from this restricted area.
